This year for our Halloween costume theme, we decided to go with Mythical Creatures, and more specifically zoological ones. We have lots of ideas, and we didn't decide this one until right about when October began. It ended up being fun and we liked the idea because they would be warm costumes!
Dad was Bigfoot! We ended up just buying his costume because with as many yards of fur fabric we'd need would be more expensive than just buying a costume. He's always liked Bigfoot, and we were especially fans when we lived in Washington.
Mom was the Loch Ness monster. We sewed and hot glue gunned the costume out of green and white felt and stuffing. The kids said it looked more like the Sinclair dinosaur, but when people saw the fins, they knew. We also made a tartan plaid scarf to help other get it. I also took a few photos with a Bear Lake shake cup because Nessie and the Bear Lake monster are kind of one in the same but in different places.
Emma was a fierce but cute dragon. She was back and forth so much and didn't decided until last minute, so we just ordered her some cosplay type pajamas, which she said were comfy. And we had Jazzy dress up like a dragon too so they were matching. We didn't see them breathe any fire, but they were fun!
Callahan was a Chupacabra, which is a Latin American mythical creature that has some features of bats, lizards, and more said to attack animals like goats and consumes their blood. We used some bat onesie pajamas too, but added some details like a six pack, some fur, a lizard type tongue, webbing, etc.
Lucy was our Yeti snow monster. Grandma Sue gave her the hat, we got a fuzzy white sweater on eBay, used some white pants we had, and got some white fur cuffs and leg warmers. Yetis live in cold climates, but Lucy was plenty hot in that costume.
Coverton was the werewolf. He's been wanting to be a werewolf for Halloween for a long while, so this was perfect. I made his hat, we got him some teeth but they weren't staying in...and we forgot to paint his face. But he liked to act the part! We glued patches of fur that looked like it was popping out of his clothes, made a tail and put that on the back, and created some shoes out of some of his old shoes, witch fingers, and faux fur. They were pretty cool and probably my favorite part of his costume.
Sydnie was the unicorn, of course. We got a jogging suit and made a yarn mane and tail we pinned on, made a unicorn horn from felt and stuffing, and some felt flowers. Then we got her some cute leg warmers that matched to go with, and made some hooves out of foam. She completed the day with some rainbow and star tatoos on her face leftover from her birthday.
We were able to do pumpkins of course. Lucy and Covey couldn't wait and they did theirs a couple of weeks early, which turned out moldy. Covey made one look like it got stabbed and Lucy's was eating a leg. I didn't even get a pic of Lucy's because she threw it away before I could as it was getting pretty gross. Some good (and morbid) creativity there. Emma and I went to a fun pumpkin carving party our sweet neighbor Jody Ball hosted and we did ours there. I did a We Believe pumpkin and Emma did a cute face one. Sydnie and Daddy did fun faces on theirs, Cal did some Star Wars silhouettes, and I did another one with silhouettes of our mythical creatures. We made some cinnamon sugar pumpkin seeds and they were so good!
We loved decorating for the holiday. The kids had a blast decorating the skeletons and hanging them in the front yard. Covey especially gets into it and Grandma has said Cov is getting all of her Halloween decorations as an inheritance which he was jazzed by.
We made some fun food like always. Things were crazy with starting a new job and subbing so much, so I didn't do as much as usual but still did quite a bit. This holiday is so fun...we just eat it up.
The weekend before Halloween, we were able to go to Utah and do some great things. We got to go to the Ogden temple to do baptisms for the dead with the older kids with Grandpa Scott and Grandma Di took the youngers to the Treehouse museum. It was an awesome morning! We did a bunch of shopping, which the kids *love*...not! That afternoon, we got our family pictures done (and decided to have him take pictures of us in our costumes too so we didn't have to do as many on Halloween). Cameron Howell took them and he was great to work with. The n we got to go to the Tolman Halloween carnival/trunk-or-treat to see Grandma Sue and Grandpa Dan. We wore our costumes over and enjoyed trunk-or-treating, though Sydnie didn't want much of the candy, just liked seeing the cars decorated. We played the games next and the kids got pretty lucky with the cake walk. We also got to see all of Grandma Sue's over the top decorations. She really gets into this holiday. Our favorite were the Grandma and Grandpa skeletons...hilarious! It was fun being there!
Monday, Halloween started out with spooky breakfast sandwiches for breakfast and I made frankenwraps for lunches. The kids were off to school and could wear their costumes, even the older kids, which they like. I headed to the Halloween parade they do next. I love how they stop and announce each child and what they're being. So fun! It was strange flying solo though, I've always had a kid in tow. Then I headed back home to clean and make chili. When the kids got out, we went to the business trick-or-treat. The Best Western by far had the coolest set up and prizes, but lots of the others had some fun things too. We went to the trunk-or-treat in the grocery store parking lot too which was a good time. I made everyone take a few pictures, why of course because it's me. We made a quick break for homemade chili, a tradition in this family that dates back to when we'd go to Grammie's to trick-or-treat. Then we all split up. Lucy met up with some friends and went trick-or-treating with them. Covey went with some of our neighbors. And Emma and Cal took Sydnie out for a bit while Dave and I passed out candy. We had quite a few trick-or-treaters so we were happy. They were all happy with the full-sized candy bars we passed out. We watched some Halloween shows on Disney while we were waiting. Everyone made out like bandits! Even Cal and Emma, who didn't go that far with Sydnie, got a bunch from our neighbors who insisted they get some sweets too. After that, the trading began. We let them do it a bit but had to cut the party short. I don't love Halloween being on a school night, but what are you going to do? Until next year...
