Emma had her science fair and some last big projects to finish up. She did so well! Her topic was "do cat's eyes really glow?" and she did a great experiment, report, and poster too. She ended up getting second place in her grade! Way to go, Em!
We had the end of year concert for the kids. Emma played with the band Snow (Yuki) and Attack of the Cyborgs. Cal played his recorder with his class. And they all sang with their classes. The theme was "A Celebration of Character", the kids all did great and we are thankful for the wonderful Geottles, their music teachers.
We went to the awards assembly. Emma got a music award and her science fair award, Cal got a music award and a reading award and even came away with a new bike and helmet, and Lucy got a reading award. Cal was shocked but so excited when they called his name, and the other kiddos were kind of jealous but kind of happy for him. Yay! Good little workers. Their grades or attendance might not be perfect, but they are some well rounded kids.
We had a piano recital and the theme was A Musical Journey through Time". All my students did great and I love teaching them! Emma played Minuet in G by Bach and a simplified version of Maple Leaf Rag, Cal played Good Morning Song by Carl Czerny and Imperial March from Star Wars, Lucy played an arrangement of Air by Mozart, and Cov debuted by playing a simplified version of Morning by Grieg. Unfortunately, baby girl was having a rough night, so we didn't get any videos and only a couple pictures. And according to Cal, lessons with me are the worst...haha! It likely has to do with the fact that I have them practice more than each song once (count, finger numbers, letter names, sing), and we drill the hard parts and have to do flash cards. Poor kids. It's been fun teaching them and to seeing how far my kids have come. They often go to the piano by themselves without prompting to play, especially their favorite songs, and to sight read. This in comparison with saying they hate piano and want to quit a couple of years ago. Win! I recently saw a survey where they asked adults, if they could learn any instrument, which would it be? Only 2% said they never want to learn any, but 70% said they would learn piano. Glad I was taught as a child and glad my kids are learning to play, such an important life skill!
The last day of school, we had crepes for breakfast and Ivy, who was staying with us for a few days, loved them. They had a flossing contest (the kids say I do it all wrong, lol!), and went off to school. Lucy and Em were sad, but the boys are excited. Emma and Lucy are going to miss their friends, and Cal too, though he knows what's coming and is ready. I can't believe Emma is done with elementary school and ready to start junior high school next year...ahhH! They only had a few hours and they brought home all of their stuff like their inch long pencils and their art projects which I loved looking through. When they got home, we talked about their last day and had corn dogs, fries, veggies and caneloupe for lunch. Then, we let the party begin! This year, we had one with the girls and their friends and Cal got to have his friends over later. We made friendship bracelets, made ice cream sundaes, played games out in the back yard and decorated and signed little notebooks for each other, exchanging info so they can keep in touch. Lucy had Brooklyn and Kaila over, sweet girls. And Emma had Ivy, Leah and Lizzie, cute besties! Later on, Cal had Seth, Aydan and Angelo over. They were crazy and fun. It was a hot day, lots of fun! Dave stayed home and worked on a bunch of home projects. We had pizza that night and went on a bike ride. It's been a great year, and we are sad to leave Scobey School but excited for what the future holds and have heard nothing but great things about Columbus and the schools and community there!
Now that summer is here, we've made our summer bucket list. This year we're putting it in a frame and checking it off with a dry erase board. We're also trying hard to stick to a schedule. I gave the kids paper plates they made a schedule on and clothespins to decorate, and they're going to try to move the clothespins along as they do each of their responsibilities. We'll see how effective it is. It is kind of a challenge for us to stay focused and structured sometimes, no matter how hard I try. But let's hope for the best this summer! Lots of good times, lots of changes!
