Our little pioneer children had a great Pioneer Day (or two). We started things off at the Ogden Pioneers Day parade in Ogden with Grandpa Scott, Grandma Di, Adam, Meghan, Steven and Ruby. It was a great one, and though no candy which was a little disappointing for the kids, there were some great floats and entries and we had a great time together!
Next, we met up with the Ryerse gang at Ogden Dinosaur Park. First though, a "popsicle bust". When we went on road trips growing up, we'd buy a giant bag of popsicles and eat all we wanted. Grandma got a bunch of creamies and we did just that before going, because it was so hot. The Dinosaur museum and park was great. Not our usual Pioneer day type of activity, but it was a lot of fun being with both sides of the family. And we haven't been in years, so the younger ones especially loved it. Then it was to Wendy's for lunch.
We went to Grandma Di's next for our pioneer dinner. Emma helped Grandma make a chicken pie, which had chicken, hard boiled eggs and bacon all in a pastry crust and it was really good! We also had pioneer salad, whole wheat bread, and some homemade ice cream for dessert. We played some games, including the stick pull game and I have a little doggy. Lucy lost a tooth which added extra excitement to the night. Mark and Adam did some readings and pioneer riddles. It was a great night! How we love our pioneers and remembering them with fun traditions.
The day after Pioneer Day, we celebrated some more because we didn't get to everything we wanted to do for the holiday. At Grandma Sue's, we made little covered wagon treats out of goodies. Then we played Pioneer Pictionary that I came up with everyone, that was a hit.
I am thankful to celebrate our heritage. We have some strong, beautiful pioneer ancestors. I love reading about some of my ancestors on familysearch.org and sharing that information with the kids. Like George Washington Rose and Mary Moore, who came across the plains with the Warren Foote company. He was 31 when they traveled by covered wagon and she was 27. So close to my age. They traveled for 92 days with several kids in tow and were asked to settle in North Ogden, UT. Reading about their experiences helps give me and my little pioneer children courage to help each other out and do hard things, too.
