It's kind of funny, because mid-September, I was just thinking it's a miracle Covey has never been to the doctor's except for his well-child check-ups. I thought too soon...
September 20, we were at a meeting for the Foundation Dinner committee and with Dave being out of town, I had the youngest two with me. Cov was playing with a couple other little girls in the waiting room area and at first they were nicely playing with toys, but then began chasing each other and jumping on the couches. I went out and told Cov the same rules that apply at home applied there - we sit on couches we stand/jump on the ground. So it was better for a couple of minutes and then BAM - SCREAMS! The kid hit his forehead on the coffee table and it got a pretty good gash. He was bleeding all over and I could tell he'd need to get it stitched. The other ladies helped me get tissues and helped get him to the hospital and they went back and cleaned up the bloody mess. One watched Sydnie while I took him to the E.R. I was so grateful for all of their help. Of course these types of things always happen when Daddy is gone! Oh, I hate when any of our littles is in pain and I wish I could take it from them! He was inconsolable but we said some prayers to help him be brave and calm, which helped a bit. He kept saying he wanted Daddy and was clinging to me and shaking and screaming. The folks in the E.R. were very helpful and kind. Covey did not want shots and we had to hold him down to get the numbing medication in him (don't even get me started on the flu shot story a few weeks later. He was running and kicking and screaming...I think this episode traumatized him). He end up getting 3 stitches. And once that was done and we were able to go home, he was doing a little better but tired from the whole experience.
Once the pain was gone, Cov thought the stitches looked pretty cool and kept checking himself out in the mirror. Covey thought it was great that he looked like Frankenstein and kept acting like Frankenstein and teasing his siblings. We started calling him "Coveystein" for a while. Lucy even drew a picture of him. That night, Dave, who was having a little too much fun at the store sent some texts to Cov that had pictures of him in a Donald Trump mask and said "Make Cov great again!" and "Donald Trump says to feel better". The kids all laughed so hard, especially Covey.
We had a little chat once he was feeling better about listening to mom and dad and that we have rules to keep them safe and happy. He realized it wouldn't have happened likely if he had listened and not jumped on the couch. So lesson learned.
We got the stitches out about a week later. Cov wanted to keep them, so we got to take them home in a specimen cup for a souvenir. He was so proud to show them to everyone. Yuck, some day I'll pitch them. The more people find out, the more people say things like "boys will be boys" or "my guy did that when he was about that age", etc. I guess this is just a right of passage for a boy!
