Egg-citing Easter Events!

We did a few things before Easter to get us ready.  We made little bunny treat cards for our families together, did some special Easter preschools, and made some fun snacks and lunches to get ready!

We held a little Easter egg hunt with some of our friends Saturday morning.  It was a blast and we had a great turnout, probably about 50 people were there.  We had a brunch first, and there were lots of great things to eat...breakfast casseroles, sticky rolls, muffins, little sausages, fruit and the 4 dozen cinnamon rolls I made the night before.  While we were finishing up eating, the kids played at the park and some of the dads went to hide the eggs.  We had so many eggs, we told everyone to bring 8 eggs per child who would participate, but I think we had some extras.  On our count, the kids were off, to find the eggs.  They love it, and it was fun to see the kids helping each other.  After that, the parents visited some more and the kids played some more.  We couldn't have asked for more beautiful weather!  It was so nice!

After that, Emma's friend Erika came over to play.  We played Easter sticker tag in the backyard and the girls dressed up, did makeup and danced.  Then she went home and we played outside and rode bikes and Emma roller bladed.  Then we went over to neighbors Tony and Angie's house to play on the swing set.  They are such sweet neighbors.  In fact, they brought little bags full of candy and activities over to the kids the other day too, and are always spoiling our little ones.  Dave and I went on a date that night, while the kids played at some friends.  We did a little shopping and went out to eat.  Then I finished the Easter dresses, I had to just finish making the sashes and the headbands for the girls.

The kids woke up (not too early) on Easter morning and went straight to their Easter baskets carefully set out by Emma the night before.  The kids got a few sweet items, but mostly just a toy.  Emma got "girl" legos, Cal got a water balloon pumper machine thing, Lucy got a Talking Tom stuffed cat, and Cov got a Little People truck and Easter book (since he couldn't have candy).  They were all pretty excited, but Cal was sure that Lucy's Tom cat was his and that the purple basket should be his because he had always wanted one and he wanted to trade Lucy toys.  Then we read our last of our scripture and sang the song from our Easter countdown calendar that was featured in the friend.  We ate cereal for breakfast (fancy, I know!) and leftover cinnamon rolls and while we were talking, Cal looked out the back windows and said all excitedly, "Look!  Flying eggs!"  We all looked and then Cal busted up telling us he was just kidding and made us look.  He thought he was pretty funny, he's quite a crack-up!

While I was getting ready, I overheard the kids talking about Easter and the Savior.  It was fun to listen to them and have them not think I was listening.  They were talking a little bit about what Jesus did for them.  "Lucy, Jesus REALLY died on the cross."  It was sweet the way he said it, with conviction and faith.  In his world of make believe stories and movies, I think it blows him away that it really happened and it really affects him.

Our church service was beautiful.  The choir, speakers and soloists did a wonderful job, and I played "He Sent His Son" on the piano for the Primary children, who sounded so amazing!  In Primary, we sang lots of songs about the Savior.  I love how well they are all learning "I Stand all Amazed".  They truly sing their little hearts out and believe what they are singing!

We took a few (and by a few I mean like 50 for every decent one where everyone is looking) pictures before church, and then went after church since we ran out of time to take any of the kids.  We went down to the train station to take the pics of the kids.  They were all done being good and still though after three hours of church, so it was like pulling teeth to try to get them to take pictures.  I should've known, he he!  But they all looked so cute in their new Easter dresses and clothes.  Emma helped pick out the material and the pattern for her and Lucy's peasant dresses, I think she has a good sense of style!  And she even helped sew a few straight lines on her dress!  I made the boys bow ties as well.  I'm all about the matchey matchey!

We went home and finished getting ready for our Easter dinner.  Em and Lucy made a little Easter door hanger craft.  Our dinner was ham, baked potatoes, fruit medley salad, maple glazed carrots, and bunny rolls (which the kids said looked more like kitties - meow!).  Yum!  We had cheesecake for dessert.  Emma put jelly beans on a piece or two, ha ha!

Then we let the kids go hunt for Easter eggs.  Dave hid empty plastic eggs in the backyard (excuse the ugliness, we are going to be doing grass and some other things to beautify it soon!) and let the kids go at it.  "Do these eggs even have anything in them?!" Cal asked a few times.  Lucy was being stubborn and was throwing a fit about her shoes and didn't want to come out until Emma and Cal had found almost all of them.  So then she was sad.  So they got in and opened the eggs and weren't very amused that they were empty.  But then we went in the house and talked about how the candy and little toys are fun little gifts, but the best gift of all was the empty tomb, because it means that we can live again, like the Savior does.  But to make it up, we played a little jelly bean pictionary game.  We used the following cute poem.  Then we took turns drawing what each of the colors of jelly beans represented, and then everyone who guessed what it was got a jelly bean in that color.

It was a wonderful easter.  Truly, He did die on the cross!  He rose from the grave on the third day, and because our Savior did this, we can live again with Him and our families forever!

Because of Him

The Sunday before Easter, Dave showed me the new video Because of Him on YouTube.  It was so touching.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_S3TI4bYerU

Then on Instagram the following day, I noticed the Because of Him photo challenge.  I decided to take part in it to get in the Easter spirit, and I'm so glad I did.  It really helped me reflect on many aspects of my life and how the Savior has helped me so much.

Today is because of Him, I can be a better daughter...to my Heavenly Father and both sets of parents.  I've been blessed to be theirs and know I can be a better wife and mother and improve because of their examples.  Tonight I had to ask for forgiveness from Emma because I was getting frustrated with her and wasn't as kind as I should've been.  She quickly forgave me and I'm grateful I can repent and improve becuase of what the Savior did!  #becauseofhim #daughterofGod #Easter

jenniesewcrafty  Sweet twinners too.
stepherdeferdoo  Such a cute picture!  And so glad I'm not the only one that has to ask their daughter for forgiveness for not having enough patience with her, thanks for letting me know I'm not alone.  :)  Love this photo challenge!

Katie Marie Midgley  I love you, Mel!  You are a great mommy, daughter, and friend.  :)

#BecauseofHim I can serve others.  Our Savior showed compassion to all he met.  He was constantly serving and showed us how.  He performed miracles in order to help others.  Though my acts of service are small, like making cookies for a bake sale today with my little baker Lucy ("Mom I want to bake wif you") to benefit some projects at the "hospidable", even small kind acts can bring about great things.  #littlebaker #service with a smile.

_mandy_ Yum yum yummo!!!  My sister is in the hospital trying to have a baby so I went down to the cafeteria and they still had some of your cookies!  I asked if they were the ones you made and they said yes so we bought them!  They are SO good!  I'm going to need that recipe!!  :)  Thank you for your service.

#BecauseofHim, I can love more fully.  This is so easy to do sometimes when we are surrounded by those who are always pleasant and agreeable.  We are human though, and we are not always pleasant and agreeable.  But Christ loves us anyway with charity, His perfect love.  To love others, especially those who have tried our patience, been unkind, or wronged us, is the true challenge.  It's not easy, like today when it seemed like the whining, crying, timeouts, defiance and disobedience lasted much of the day (the baby's up crying right now just after midnight) and I'm sure it was not easy for those around me to love me either.  When this happens though, and we deal with others who make it feel hard to love, it helps me to see others through our Lord's eyes and it becomes easier to love them.  I'm grateful for His unfailing love for me despite my imperfections.  #lovemorefully  #charity

jenniesewcrafty  I love that you captured true life!  It makes me giggle.  You are such a great mom.  Sorry today was one of those tough ones.
jiner_shoemaker  I love your words Melanie
rachelclark_ I love it!  Cute even when they're mad!

#BecauseofHim I can be a better me.  Exercising is something I sometimes don't feel like doing (like me tonight) but once I do it I feel much better.  Each night I can run a little farther or a little faster or workout with more intensity.  I'm not going to run a marathon tomorrow, but each day I get better, push myself a bit more.  It's the same way with our lives.  Sometimes its hard to find the motivation, or we are too tired or busy, but when we do what's right and try our best to keep God's commandments, the Savior will make up for what we lack and help us go a little farther and a little faster each day.  He doesn't ask for perfection, he asks for us to do the best we can and I feel so much better when I'm striving to do that.  In the words of President Monson: "May we resolve to do a little better than we have done in the past."  Step by step, line upon line, we do the best we can and eventually we will reach the ultimate finish line.  #becauseofhimphotochallenge

#BecauseofHim I live in this beautiful world.  I am so thankful for the many glorious and beautiful creations that were made by Him for us to enjoy to "please the eye and gladden the heart".  One of my favorite things i the sun and I love to watch it rise and set.  This world is truly a gift from the Lord.  #nofilter  #sunrisesunset  #wyomingsky

Donna Gomez  Amen!!

#BecauseofHim I am inspired, and many times I am inspired by others who are tools in His hands.  I'm thankful for siblings who share, Amy gave me some eggs from her chickens and I used them and a recipe she shared withme to make cinnamon rolls.  I'm thankful for good people to be around, great friends who are always so willing to help and make me want to be a better person.  I'm thankful for children who teach me new lessons each day, as they did while we were playing outside this afternoon.  I'm thankful for neighbors who care, our neighbors brought some Easter surprises over for the kids and they were so excited.  I'm thankful for my husband, who is always putting my needs before his own, putting me at ease and putting a smile on my face.  I'm thankful for the authors of good literature that is thought provoking and uplifting.  I'm thankful for parents who share their talents with others, like my Mom who taught me so much, like how to sew.  Because of these people, and the so many others I know who live as the Savior would have them live, I am inspired to do great things!  #inspiredbyothers  #inspiredbyJesusChrist  #Easter

amy2rollins  You're amazing mellie and inspire me!!  Those cinnamon rolls look yummy!  Happy Easter love you!

#BecauseofHim I can get answers to my prayers.  I'm so thankful I was taught to pray in faith from the time I could talk.  I'm grateful to have a loving Father in Heaven who listens and cares.  I'm given the answers, protection, direction, and peace I need for myself and my family in time if I truly humble myself and pray fervently.  this is something I can work on though, and I feel the more work we put into it, the more powerful our prayers and their outcomes are.  I am thankful that through the Savior, we can get the help we need in this life.  What a blessing!  #Hehearsandanswersme  #HappyEaster  #becauseofhimphotochallenge  #lastday

Conference Weekend

We had a wonderful conference weekend!  As I mentioned in the post before about Dave's birthday, Amy, Kolby & Boji were able to come and spend it with us.  We loved each minute being together and soaking up LDS General Conference.  We couldn't get enough Boji!  He is too too cute!  He just got his first little teeth and his little grin kills you every time!

Saturday morning, we woke up and made {extra brown} hash browns, orange julius (Kolby had to make it, of course, since his orange julius is famous!) and prophet pancakes (no credit for that, found it on Pinterest, ha ha!).  I put out all kinds of toppings and sauces and stuff to decorate and let each person make their own.  It was really fun and they turned out cute!

Then Kolby, Amy, Dave & Emma went to 1-80 Powersports to check out some side-by-sides, since Amy & Kolby are in the market.  They loved test driving them and seeing all of the toys!  Someday it would be fun to have one of those!

To engage the kids, I tried something where I put pictures of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on separate zip lock bags, and put a little activity or snack in each one.  So when each of those people spoke, we went to find their picture and said their name and got the prize.  The kids liked it, but I don't think we'll do it again.  I think it was more of a distraction than a help.  Ha ha!  By Sunday morning, our front room was scattered with bags and puzzle pieces and wrappers, it was outta control!  Next time, we'll come up with something else.  :)

In between the Saturday morning and afternoon sessions, we went out to Buck's for lunch.  It was tasty and fun and Amy & Kolb loved the hunting atmosphere and theme.  We've been there a couple of other times, and it's always fun.  They also brought a giant brownie sundae on a pizza plate to Dave for his birthday, which was enough to feed our army.  Coverton tried a lemon, which he loved, and Boji wasn't so sure at first, but ended up seeming to enjoy it.  Cov also tried a pickle and he couldn't get enough of that.  After that, we just went to the shop next door and Boji got some cute Air Jordans.  And we drove through the town a little bit.

During the Saturday afternoon session, we drove up to Saratoga to soak in the hot springs.  We met the Mayor of Saratoga and it was Boji and Covey's first time ever swimming.  They loved it and were all smiles and splashes!  The rest of us enjoyed it, too.  It is so good for Cal's skin and always feels so good!

We rushed back after swimming so the guys could get ready for the Priesthood session.  They left, and we had BBQ chicken salad for dinner and played and talked.  Then, Amy cut Emma's hair ("I want my hair up to here!" she always says pointing to the top of her ear).  It looks so cute and Em looks adorable!    Then she cut my hair!  I wasn't really planning on really cutting it a lot, but figured since she threatened she almost brought color (*gasp - I've never done that and am not planning on it, ha ha!) I better get it cut.  I told her I trust her with my life and I trusted her to do whatever she wanted with my hair, and she went for a longer pixie cut.  It's the shortest my hair has ever been (minus my infancy) and I love, love it!  Amy is seriously so amazing at cutting hair, she really has a gift!  Thank you, Amy Lou for my new 'do!  :)

Sunday morning, we woke up and ate breakfast and then Amy, Kolby & Boji headed back home.  We loved having them come and had such good times with them!  Please come back soon!

Sunday morning, we got so much out of conference (unlike Saturday, the noise level was through the roof!).  It was quiet and peaceful.  Afternoon was a little louder, but still, it was a great session.  I love Conference and knowing that God reveals His word to us through His modern day prophets.  I know His Church is true and these are His prophets and they are called of God!  How blessed we are to be able to hear from them twice a year, and more with church publications and periodicals.  They bring peace and direction to a world filled with turmoil and confusion, for which I am so thankful!

The speakers and music were all so touching and moved me to tears and gave me goosebumps!  I thought I'd share some of my favorite thoughts from the sessions, but my little notebook is missing in action.  The emphasis on discipleship, obedience, kindness, really standing up for what we believe, being careful in use of digital media, and putting the family first were things that stood out to me and things I need to work on.  Here are a few little quotes that I enjoyed.
