Merry Christmas 2014 from the Ryerses!

This year, our Christmas cards were all random and each one was a bit different.  Here is a sampling.  It was kind of fun making each one unique.  And they were quick to put together, as I bought some little pre-made die cut pictures.  :)  Here's how they turned out.  Nothing fancy, but I love homemade for the holidays!

On the inside, we included the following photo collage, and this:

Ryerse Rant 2014
Dave – Plugging away at the MHCC Hospital as C.O.O.  Serves as the 2nd Counselor in the Young Men’s at church and the Scoutmaster.  Went to Nashville for work training and to relax with his tag-along wife. Won the Biggest Looser contest at his work, losing 30 lbs. Enjoys college football & wrestling with the kids.
Melanie – Loves being a mom {most days}.  Asking Santa for a housekeeper though, so she can play all day and not have to clean up after the mess.  ;)  Started working for American Greetings as a very part-time Merchandiser.  Serves as Relief Society Weekday Meeting Coordinator and ward organist.
Emma (8) – Got to visit family in Utah for two weeks this summer alone.  Turned 8 in August and got baptized in September at Martin’s Cove, WY.  Enjoys being on student council and volunteering at the animal shelter every other week.  Loves staying up all night reading.  Doesn’t like piano.
Callahan (6) – Loved playing soccer and football this year. Finally started Kindergarten this fall.  He’s really soaking it up and is quite the social boy.  Super heroes and playing games are his favorite.
Lucy (3) – Is all about all things girl! Dressing up, painting nails, playing with babies, shoes, everything purple & pink!  Started a co-op preschool this fall, which is so fun for her.
Coverton – (1) Is always on the “go go go” (also his favorite thing to say).  Loves all of his siblings, dancing, and food.  Doesn’t like to sleep at nights or getting new teeth in. So darn cute!
As a family, visited Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills this summer, visited Utah several times, and have been exploring Wyoming many weekends.

A very happy Christmas to you!  We love our family and friends from all over and wish you the best this season and for the upcoming year!  Love, Dave, Mel, Emma, Cal, Lucy & Cov

Callahan es seis anos! Feliz Cumpleanos, Callahan!

We celebrated Callahan's 6th birthday the day after Thanksgiving.  6 years ago, he came on a Black Friday as well.   Sue was talking on Thanksgiving about how we were playing games and every once in a while, I'd get a little white in the face and work through contractions and she'd ask "Are you okay?"  And I'd say "yes, I'm fine."  She soon convinced Dave to take me to the hospital, and about 45 minutes after arriving, Cal joined us.  What a little stud he is, I love him!

He took donuts to his class for his birthday.  They celebrated and sang to him and did some special things for him at school and on the bus.  He was kind of stoked to be the center of attention, because he eats that up.  He had a great day.

Cal said for his birthday, he wanted a Nacho Libre birthday, so that's what we did.  This was what was on his invitations:

Callahan es seis añosPlease join us in our quarters for a cumpleanos partay.
Friday, November 28 from 5 to 8 p.m.  Casa Ryerse.  XxoOooXxXo

On the way down to Utah the night before Thanksgiving, Cal stopped right before we got to Grandma's house and asked "Can we go to the store and get some chips?"  I thought he was just saying that because he wanted to eat some and explained to him I'm sure Grandma would have some.  He explained to me further "No, not to eat.  For my party!  When Nacho brings the chips it's so hilarious!"  That cracked me up, what a funny boy!

We had his party on his exact birthday.  Cal wanted to dress up like Nacho, so we used mostly what we had around the house, but ordered him a new mask, which he was so stoked about!

We made luche libre masks as everyone was coming.  Cardstock masks, markers and plenty of glitter glue to go around.  It was fun seeing all of the fun creations the kids came up with!

Then, it was time to eat!  We had blue and red punch, nachos, "nice" salad where people could create their own designs, and homemade refried beans.  We turned on the movie and started it while we were eating (which the kids were shocked at that because I never let them do eat and watch TV).  Cal was quoting along and he'd do everything Nacho did.  It was pretty hilarious!

Emma and Tayla made Cal this little beard during the movie.  They said it was the one thing missing from his costume.  Ha!

What Nacho Libre party would be complete without a pinata?  We made a Ramses pinata for the event.  Bueno!  It held up pretty well and everyone liked it.  I liked that we got to use up the rest of our Halloween candy.  ;)

Get that corn, I mean, cake outta my face!  Cal's cake turned out pretty funny, we only had a few mishaps while making it!  We also made a few cupcakes, just in case.

Finally, we ended the night opening up presents (we've learned to do this last, as once the presents are open, that's all Cal wants to do!).  He got some cool things...a Lego Ideas Book, a tennis racket and kids tennis balls, a motorcycle, four wheeler, airplane, car, and other fun stuff.  He also got a trip to the Lego Store with Grandma Sue, which he just loved!  Emma went too and they had a fun day with Grandma.

All about Cal at 6...

Cal is a tender-hearted boy.  He's very sensitive to the needs of others and very sweet.

Still not growing out of time-out and likes to spend time there it seems some days...it's 6 minutes on the wall now.

Cal is very silly at times and likes to make funny faces, tell jokes, and do things to make us all laugh.

He's loving school.  Likes P.E. and music the best.

Callahan is very social and friendly.  He's also quite the ladies man for a kindergartner.  He will come home with notes or pictures and little trinkets from girls.

Enjoys reading, video games, football, snuggling and giving hugs & kisses.

He's a good brother and especially loves his little bro. Covey and is very sweet with him.  "You want brother?" he asks him all of the time.  Then he plays with him, helps him, hugs him, and says "you love brother!"

Cal is a great example to us of sincere prayer.  He always says the sweetest, most sincere prayers.  He know who he's talking to and knows God will answer his prayers.

Happy 6th birthday to our active boy who keeps us on our toes, and is so very sweet!  We love you so much, Callahan!  You get cuter each year!

Thank you, God, for the things I love

We had a truly beautiful Thanksgiving season!  The whole month of November, each night at dinner, we would reflect on our blessings for that day, and think of something we wanted to add to our Gratitude tree.  We'd write it on a leaf (or Emma got way fancy and added pictures and cute artistic details to each one) and put it on the paper tree (that Cov liked to try to pull down daily, he he!) on our back door.  It was neat to hear the Dave and the kid's responses and reflect on my own blessings and how Heavenly Father has blessed me so much in so many ways that I might not normally see if I weren't thinking about them.  Lately I haven't been as good as a few months ago about writing down the miracles I've experienced, the Lord's hand in my life, and the many blessings I enjoy.  But when I do this, I feel as President Eyring did when he said:

"More than gratitude began to grow in my heart. Testimony grew. I became ever more certain that our Heavenly Father hears and answers prayers. I felt more gratitude for the softening and refining that come because of the Atonement of the Savior Jesus Christ. And I grew more confident that the Holy Ghost can bring all things to our remembrance—even things we did not notice or pay attention to when they happened...My point is to urge you to find ways to recognize and remember God’s kindness. It will build our testimonies..you and they will be blessed as you remember what the Lord has done. You remember that song we sometimes sing: 'Count your many blessings; name them one by one, And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.'”

Dave brought me home some beautiful flowers for Thanksgiving.  They were calla lilies and I love them, what a sweetheart!  I am thankful to have such a sweet companion for this life and the next!

I helped Dave smoke two turkeys on our grill for his work Thanksgiving party.  As I was cleaning the turkeys and getting them ready, the kids were laughing so hard because as I was cutting off the wrapping around the turkey, I hit the bag of gravy and it was spewing out all over.  It was in the area between the turkeys two legs, so I joked with them the turkey was peeing.  We all had a good laugh over that one!  I'm kind of a baby about pulling out the neck and all that and the kids were kinda grossed out watching it, I'm surprised they even ate the turkey on Thanksgiving.  We were up until 2 in the morning finishing it up because they were such big birds.  We got a good sampling though and it was tasty turkey.

The day before Thanksgiving, we packed our bags, read some Thanksgiving books, and headed to Utah to be with family.  We had pizza and hung out the night we got there, watching Guardians of the Galaxy, which Em and Cal loved.  Thursday morning, I woke up and offered up a prayer just in gratitude.  I didn't ask for anything, but thanked God for all that I have.  The more I prayed, the more came to mind that I needed to thank my Creator for.  I love doing this every once in a while.  It is so refreshing and I felt the spirit so strongly and God's nod of approval.  I just know there are so many more things that I didn't include in that one prayer.  I guess that's one reason it's important to "pray always".  We got all ready, and went to my parents to help get ready for a Thanksgiving lunch.  We had a traditional, delciious meal, and then did some activities.  My mom made a cute little turkey and gave playdough to the little ones to make faux"food" out of the dough to give to the turkey to "eat". They loved that!  The big girls were given a bunch of craft supplies, and Grandma Di told them to write a script for a play and make puppets for it.  They did such a cute job, we loved their play about the Peacock and her chick.  We played outside, and played a little football and soccer, and played on the swing set.  It was a beautiful, warm day, about 60 degrees out!  We had pie, everyone brought their own different kinds.  I made pumpkin and salted chocolate cookie pie, we had egg nog, pecan, key lime, chocolate satin, and apple.  Mmm...it was amazing!  Finally, we put together packages for missionaries we know.  We made cards, wrote letters, and wrote down our testimonies to put in Book of Mormons to send around the world.  It was one of the best Thanksgivings ever!  I love all of the fun and creative things my mom does with us.

Then, it was to the Ryerses for Thanksgiving dinner.  We helped get some last minute things together, I made some rolls and it was time to give thanks and eat. One of the few times of the year we all sit at the table together!  It is always a great conversation around the table.  We had traditional turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, tons of Ryerse jello salads, a relish tray, cabbage rolls and bean salad courtesy of Shirley, marinara pasta salad, and a few other Ryerse classics.  It was yummy!  Then we played "Imaginiff" with the adults, while the kids watched a movie.  It was a hoot.  The kids weren't cooperating and didn't want any pictures, but I did snap a few.

We stayed the rest of the weekend - we loved relaxing!  Dave and I went on a shopping date (I know, we're exciting like that), went to go see the new Hunger Games "Mockingjay" movie, played with cousins, and Saturday night, we went to Temple Square to see the lights.  The lights on Temple Square and visiting City Creek was great.  Our kids always love it!  It was so warm, like 58 degrees out!  Everyone was taking off their coats and jackets.  It was perfect!  Our kids especially had a great time with Todd, Julie's boyfriend, soon to be fiancee.  He's a great guy, and it's fun to see Julie so happy!  Cov was pointing to all of the bright lights, Lucy's faces were priceless, and she truly lit up when she saw the beautiful scenes, Cal was cracking me up as he touched some of the little bulbs and would pretend to be electrocuted, and Emma enjoyed being with Grandma and Grandpa.  They all loved our visit to the Disney Store as well.  So magical!  It was a nice night and a perfect way to end a nice weekend!

Sunday, we went to church with the Ryerses, then went to my parents for lunch and to visit.  Then we drove home safely in the snow.  We are so blessed!  Let the Holiday season begin!
